One of my
favorite movies is “Butch Cassidy and the Sundance
Kid.” The synergy between these two actors is
fabulous and what we can learn from them is priceless. During one exciting
scene, Butch and the Kid are facing 10 men who have been chasing them for days.
The two are holed up on top of a mountain of rock with only two options in
which to survive. One, they can stand their ground and shoot it out with the
armed men who have been on their heels and hope to be victorious, or two they
can jump into the raging river several hundred feet below. Butch sheepishly
admits to Sundance he has never shot anyone and jumping is their best option.
The Kid doesn’t want to consider this
alternative because he admits he can’t swim. After a good laugh at
the expense of his partner, Butch makes a profound statement, “the fall is probably going to kill us.” Like these two actors, we occasionally find the decisions
we make in life can make or break us. In the case of Butch and Sundance, it
could kill them.
Experience
is something that doesn't just show up one day, one needs to learn and grow
into experience. It is gained by doing, doing, and then doing again. Once we
have it then we are better able to understand where we need to go or not go to
be successful in life. Knowledge is what we gain from experience. A small child
quickly learns not to touch a hot stove once they have been burned. Strive to
gain the necessary knowledge from the experience learned process. Reading and
asking questions affords us that needed information, however staying quiet and
listening affords us the ability to learn from others.
Why is
knowledge power? Once before a keynote speech the speaker was showing signs of
nervousness and someone asked why he was so jittery. He commented he was afraid
he would not remember what he was going to say. The spectator made this one
statement, “no one knows
what you are going to say but you, stay calm and have a good time.” When you have knowledge you
are able to plan your own route to success. No one can take away the knowledge
or experience you possess. Use your knowledge wisely and you will be in control
of your life, career, and destiny at all times.
Learning is an active process. We learn by doing. Only knowledge
that is used sticks in your mind
